How many of us have unexpectedly taken work from the office to our homes? It seems like everyone has always said, “Make sure there is healthy work/home separation” but when you suddenly find your office and home morphed into one place, that can be really difficult to do. Here are my top 4 tips for maintaining productivity if you suddenly find yourself working from home!
Get dressed.
I know we all joke about wearing jeans at home during quarantine, but there is SOMETHING about getting up and getting ready for the day, changing out of your pajamas and pulling yourself together (even if that just means changing into your “daytime” jammies! Ha!). It makes you feel more productive because you’ve already accomplished something! You put on pants! Yay you!!
Have a space that is designated for work.
I know if you’ve got young kids at home, this can be difficult. Believe me, I know exactly how that feels. But having a space that’s your designated “workspace” is good for young kids to see too! They can learn that when you’re in your office (or at that special seat in the kitchen), that you are working. This is good visual consistency for them and physical consistency for you! I turned the front room (which was originally just a sitting room and/or amazon fulfillment warehouse haha) into a home office.

Do the little things that put you into “work mode”
For me, that’s a cup of coffee while I read The Skimm and go through emails. It’s the first thing I do when I sit down at my desk at work, and keeping that habit has made the transition from working at the school to working from home helpful. It puts me in the right frame of mind to start getting things done. Mindset is everything.
Zoom & FaceTime
Face to Face is priceless. Getting to actually speak with your teammates is so helpful. Phone calls, FaceTime, and Zoom have been lifesavers! It’s a great way to stay on the same page with the people who are part of your team.
